Washington Square Park

I had my most negative experience in Washington Square Park tonight. I chose a bench facing east so that I could see the John Hancock building behind the fountain and apparently the east side of the park belongs to the rats. Twice I saw a rat running directly toward me from the fountain at the center of the park. The first time, the rat ran right under my bench before I could even get my feet up and the second time, I scared it so much by lifting my feet that it retreated. But when I say that I have never seen this many rats in one place, I’m not exaggerating. I even heard them squeaking and fighting a few minutes ago. All I know is that my ankles have never felt more vulnerable and they are not as afraid of me as I would like them to be.

Before this turned into a tangent on rats, I was planning to write about what was running through my mind on the walk here.

  1. Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift are as good as they used to be. I know that there has been a lot of talk about Taylor Swift recently and that she can be a polarizing celebrity, but hear me out. I listened to both of these artists growing up, meaning 12-17 and beyond, and while I haven't kept up with their new music for the past few years, I’ve visited several of their new songs and I have not been disappointed. Similarly, I think I’ve underestimated Miley Cyrus and her new music and I stand by the fact that Lorde has always been underrated.

  2. I really want to go shopping. But like, for hours. I want to look at every article of clothing in the store, try on the most unreasonably priced things, and not have anyone there to judge me. I want to bargain hunt regardless of the fact that nothing I’m buying is a real necessity. I want to shop like my mom and I used to.

  3. I was also thinking of how much I love and appreciate Washington Square Park and despite my interaction with the rats and the fact that I had to relocate from my perfect spot twice because of them, I’m still a huge fan.
