I’ve known a lot of women who are sure never to walk alone at night and I understand. It’s scary to think about what could happen, especially when we hear and see it happen often. I would never judge someone for taking that precaution.
To me, being able to do what I want, when I want is part of the beauty of living in the city. Everything is accessible by foot and (sometimes) open late and that’s something I didn’t have growing up. So when I moved and finally felt like I had that freedom, I wasn’t going to let fear get in the way.
All that isn’t to say that I’m not careful or that you shouldn't be cautious. I'm always taking note of who is around and where I am. I always walk fast to make it look like I have a place to be and know where I’m going. I carry a pocket knife. I always trust my gut. If something doesn't feel right, do something about it, no matter how it seems.
I know I can’t be prepared for everything, but I refuse to confine myself to my apartment just because it’s dark.
