Wabash Avenue Bridge

Out of the car, into the elevator. Down two floors, out the doors. Onto the sidewalk, across the street. Down the street, over the bridge. Along the river, back over the bridge. Across the street, through the doors. Up two floors, into the back seat. In the elevator, down two floors. Across the street, down the sidewalk. Into the lobby, into the elevator. Up twenty-seven floors, through the door.

This was our walk and voyage home after parking the car and realizing we forgot something in it. This is city living at its finest hour.

Like anything, there are positives and negatives to living downtown. Another negative besides waiting for elevators and slightly less than convenient parking spots is the noise. Most days, I don’t even hear the sirens, loud cars, and yelling people, but when I ever do, I often find myself wondering out of frustration, “Why is it so loud?” The truth is that it really isn’t anyone’s fault (except maybe the losers who purposefully rev their engines just because they think they look cool), it’s just the sound of life in the city; and life in the city is loud.

On days when I find myself slightly overwhelmed by the people and the noise, and those days do come every now and then, I like to think of my apartment as a castle where I get to retreat to my cozy couch, oversized tv, and plentiful supply of weed to gaze out over all the noise and the peasants and the chaos on the street below. That usually helps.
