Three words to describe this read:
Unexpected- Whatever I was expecting from this book is not what I received, but it made me enjoy the story even more. While the main love story throughout the book was somewhat predictable, Moreno-Garcia still left room to wonder if your assumptions would turn out to be correct.
Exciting- Moreno-Garcia certainly knows how to kick off a story. Within the first few chapters, the precedent was set and I was already wondering where the story would lead. There were definitely a few unexpected twists along the way that made it hard to put the book down.
Fantastical- Fantasy isn’t usually what I look for in a book, but I ended up enjoying that aspect of the book much more than I thought I would. I can only hope that the strange biological aspects of the story are in fact not possible, but Moreno-Garcia did a great job at making me care despite my initial reaction to the less realistic plot lines.
Quote:
“‘I don’t want anything to change,’ she said.
‘It’s inevitable.’”
This simple exchange really spoke to me. I think it is a feeling most people have at some point in their life. Sometimes the sense that change is in the air is nagging and worrisome, but sometimes we have the luxury of obliviousness before dramatic, life-changing events. It’s difficult to accept that stages in our life, even the most enjoyable, aren’t meant to last forever, but usually there is very little we can do to stop it. The good news is that most of the time change is for the best.
