The Chicago River

In honor of the Lorde concert Friday, here are some of my favorite lyrics from her music:

“Remember what you thought was grief before you got the call?”

Secrets from a Girl (Who’s Seen It All)

I like this lyric because unfortunately, it’s relatable.

“But I can take it from here. I’ll find my own bravado.”

Bravado

The music that plays along with these lyrics is so inspiring. It generates a sense of independence.

“There’s nothing I want but money and time.”

Million Dollar Bills

What could be more true?

“You're my best friend and we’re dancing in a world alone.”

A World Alone

I like the contrast of being alone with somebody you love.

“I care for myself the way I used to care about you.”

Hard Feelings/Loveless

This one makes me think of all the things that we do for other people that we should remember to do for ourselves.

“All the nights spent off our faces, trying to find these perfect places, what the fuck are perfect places anyway?”

Perfect Places

The need to find the "right place" without an idea of where that could be seems to be a common theme in modern music and a lot of people likely relate.

“I try to let whatever has to pass through me pass through but this is staying a while, I know it might not let me go.”

What Was That?

It’s funny when you recognize “therapy language” in the real world and this is one of those moments for me. It feels like she’s trying to accept whatever she is going through but also acknowledge that letting it go will take a while.

“2009 me’d be so impressed.”

GRWM

There are days when this lines runs through my head unprompted. I know that me in 2009 would be beyond impressed with my life now and I try to remind myself of that.

“Why do we run to the ones we do? I don’t belong to anyone.”

David

The music along with these lyrics is absolutely haunting and it adds to the feeling of wonderment and independence that the words invoke.

“Go all the way, have your fun, have it all, this’ll take you down. Get through the days, do your thing, do it well, this’ll take you down.”

No Better

This is one of my favorite Lorde songs and I love these lyrics. They remind me that no one makes it out of life alive so we need to make the most of it.
