River North

Today, I was reminded how grateful I am to have a job where I don’t interact with the general public. All I had to do was spend 30 minutes in the lobby of the hotel where I work and within those 30 minutes, a guest tried to weasel their way into a late checkout without asking or paying. On a normal day, this would have been an annoyance but today, we were sold out and there were about 400 people arriving prior to noon when the standard check in time is 4:00 pm.
I think the most frustrating thing about working with the general public is that you try your hardest to be kind, helpful, patient, and understanding just to realize that the person you are trying to help is not trying to cooperate with you but exploit you for your kindness. You almost feel foolish for thinking that your goodwill would be reciprocated.
