Lake Shore Park

It can sound ironic coming from someone who loves living in a big anonymous city, but I really think community is one of our greatest forms of protest. In a world that depends on people consuming more and new things in order to fulfill their needs, being able to depend on each other instead of companies or products breaks the cycle. If companies had to earn our trust and respect as a community instead of only having to beat out their competitors on price or accessibility, we could demonstrate the importance of our values on companies instead of letting them influence us and tell us what it is we need to spend our money on next. This would prove to companies and government that we don’t need them as much as they need us. If we could depend on each other for more, we wouldn’t need to depend on companies or government hanging our necessities over our heads in exchange for production.

When inclined to isolate and consume, try instead reaching out to the community for help and show kindness to those around you who are in need. The smallest act of kindness can go a long way.
