While Amy Jenkins had success publishing Honeymoon as her debut novel, she is more widely-known as a screenwriter. She created and wrote for the British TV show This Life, wrote and produced the movie Elephant Juice, and wrote Daphne, a dramatized documentary on Daphne du Maurier. She is married to journalist Jonathan Heawood and they have one son together.

Three words to describe this read:

Comic- There were many humorous moments throughout the story which I appreciated. Honey’s ability to crack a joke even through difficult times made the story more approachable.

Sticky- The main character kept finding herself in stranger and more awkward situations. It was one of her relatable flaws and quite honestly, kept the story interesting.

Underdeveloped- While the sticky situations kept me interested, I felt that the ending was lackluster compared to the suspense leading up to it. I wanted more for the main character but feel that I could’ve been convinced that the ending was the best thing for her with a little more explanation.

Quote:

“I thought about how much I hate the way that when you’re grown-up you have to carry your own life around everywhere, the whole time. With no respite, goddamn it.”

This quote made me think of the song “Getting Older” by Billie Eilish, which I love. Both have the feeling of adulthood being somewhat of a burden that we carry by ourselves and while I don’t necessarily believe that to be true, I do resonate with the feeling from time to time and even wonder why it feels like no one warned me of it growing up.
