Three words to describe this read:
Suburban- The setting of the story very much impacted the overall feel. The quiet traditional suburbia compared to the nontraditional background of one of the main characters, Mia, set the tone for the main conflict.
Dynamic- The story navigated a lot of different relationships and the more that each character’s back story was revealed, the more my opinions changed.
Political- Several different hot-button political topics were discussed throughout the book, but in the best way. Each was addressed from multiple perspectives giving the reader a well-rounded look at these issues that often feel overly-simplified by modern media.
Quote:
"Most of the time, everyone deserves more than one chance. We all do things we regret now and then. You just have to carry them with you."
This quote encompasses what is so difficult about empathy. Often we want to label people as good or bad, right or wrong, deserving or undeserving, but the truth is likely much more complicated. When we take a moment to empathize and remember our own past mistakes, hopefully the need to label falls away and we are able to extend more grace and understanding.
