Jane Austen was born in the south of England in 1775. Austen was the youngest of 7 children. She and her sister attended schools from time to time, including Oxford, but most of her education came from reading. Austen had written most of her more successful works prior to the age of 22, was not published until she was 35, and did not enjoy much recognition during her life. She died at the age of 41 in the same southern England county where she was born. Since she died, her works have continuously been published and are now widely known around the world.

Three words to describe this read:

Satisfying- By the end of the book, it feels like all the loose ends are tied which can feel rare compared to modern stories.

Traditional- From the names to the language to the culture, this book encompasses what life and society must have been for the people of this class at the turn of the 19th century England.

Straightforward- While you can argue that the language and culture of the time was very indirect in comparison to modern language, nothing was said or done without meaning. The plot of the story was the same. One event leads into the next and so on until the resolution.

Quote:

“I am the happiest creature in the world. Perhaps other people have said so before, but no one with such justice. I am happier even than Jane; she only smiles. I laugh.”

This quote is so wholesome that I had to choose it as my favorite, especially considering that others from the book aren’t so uplifting and positive.
