The hottest and most coveted literary award right next to The Pulitzer Prize.

If you’ve been following my book reviews this year, you may be curious about which were my favorites, or maybe not. Regardless, I chose the three books that I most enjoyed reading and described them by their best quality since I’m not decisive enough to call any of them the best. See what you think!

Most Surprising:

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

I picked up this book expecting some Nicholas Sparks-like romance and what I read was very different. Once you get past the odd overtones of sexual grooming, the story is very unique and SAD in the best way. Plus, it takes place in Chicago which really just makes me happy. If you're in the mood to bawl your eyes out and feel something, I highly recommend it.

Similar Mood:

The Dive from Clausen's Pier by Ann Packer

Most Compelling:

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

I don’t know how else to describe this book besides a masterpiece. The storyline spans multiple generations which is very beautiful. It provides insight into the culture among certain African tribes and the eventual struggle of assimilating into American culture at the height of slavery. Needless to say, the story is eye-opening.

Another Window into Another Culture:

Heads by Harry by Lois-Ann Yamanaka

Most Impactful:

The Shack by WM. Paul Young

This being the second time I’ve read this book, it absolutely did not disappoint. If you’re looking to change the way you think about God and religion in general, this is the book for you. It will make you bawl your eyes out while simultaneously giving you hope and a whole new outlook on life… and death.

Thank you to everyone who caught this year's Redhead's Reading: Best Books of the Year review. Happy New Year!
